Faculty Advising

About the Faculty Advising Program

The Faculty Advising Program at SBS is designed to provide undergraduate students structured academic counselling to support their holistic development and success throughout their degree program. Faculty advisors provide a safe and supportive space where students feel heard, cared for, and empowered throughout their university journey. They also play a key role in guiding students’ academic progress while fostering an environment of trust and encouragement.

The Faculty Advising Program works as follows:

  • Each student is assigned a dedicated faculty advisor at the time of enrollment.
  • Advisors provide ongoing guidance on academic trajectories, electives, graduate studies, and career pathways.
  • The program offers personalized support to help students make the most of their time at SBS.
  • When needed, advisors connect students with the right department, person, or resource for specialized queries.
  • In their first year, students are required to meet their assigned faculty advisor at least once each semester. These meetings are a structured part of the program to ensure students receive the right guidance as they begin their academic journey.
  • Beyond the first year, students are encouraged to continue meeting their advisors whenever they have academic queries, need support in course planning, or seek advice on career and graduate study opportunities.
  • Additional meetings can be scheduled by either the advisor or the student, depending on need.

The Advisor’s Role

Faculty Advisors act as mentors who:

  • Guide students on academic progress and long-term planning.
  • Provide support in course selection, study habits, and goal setting.
  • Identify early signs of academic struggle and connect students with resources.
  • Maintain a supportive, confidential, and non-judgmental environment.

The Student’s Role

Advising is a two-way partnership. Students are expected to:

  • Take initiative in scheduling and attending meetings.
  • Come prepared with questions, ideas, or concerns.
  • Follow through on agreed action items and use recommended support services.
  • Share honest feedback at the end of each semester to improve the advising process.
